Five Grandma's cookie recipes for the Advent season to bake

For me, the scent of cinnamon, vanilla, and freshly baked cookies is as much a part of Advent as candlelight 🕯️ and cozy evenings ❄️. Baking these sweet treats is more than just a tradition; it's a step back in time to childhood. My grandma's recipes remind me of times when we stood together in the kitchen—me covered in flour, her armed with endless patience ❤️. Today, I mix these heartwarming classics with international favorites and serve them all on one of my handmade wooden serving boards 🪵.

Here are five cookie recipes to sweeten the Advent season – suitable for every occasion and every baking skill level.

1. Simple & nostalgic: Butter cookies from Grandma's baking book (Germany) 🇩🇪

Grandma's butter cookies are a must for the first Advent. They're easy to make yet incredibly delicious 😋. Her secret? A little more butter than the recipe calls for.

Recipe:

  • 250 g flour, 125 g butter, 125 g sugar, 1 egg, 1 tsp vanilla sugar.
  • Knead all ingredients into a dough, roll out, cut out cookies and bake at 180 °C until golden brown.
  • Serving idea:

    Place the cookies on your wooden board and decorate them with fir branches 🌲 and Christmas balls 🎄. A few icing decorations transform them into little works of art.

    2. Buttery soft & royal: Shortbread from Scotland 🏴

    Shortbread brings coziness into the home—perfect with a cup of tea ☕ or hot cocoa 🍫. It's a winter treat that reminds the palate of a little vacation.

    Recipe:

  • 300 g flour, 200 g butter, 100 g sugar.
  • Mix butter and sugar until creamy, then add the flour, press into a tin and bake at 150°C.
  • Serving idea:

    Cut shortbread into small squares and arrange on your board with a jar of jam 🍓 or lemon curd 🍋 for a British touch.

    3. Vanilla Dreams: Vanilla Crescents from Austria 🇦🇹

    Every time I bake vanilla crescents, I think of the little homemade cookie bags I used to give away at Christmas 🎁. They were always the first to disappear.

    Recipe:

  • 200 g flour, 100 g butter, 50 g ground almonds, 50 g sugar.
  • Form the dough into croissants, bake at 175 °C and roll in powdered sugar while still warm.
  • Serving idea:

    Arrange the croissants on the serving board in the shape of a heart ❤️ – because the way to a person’s heart is through their stomach.

    4. Caramel Dreams: Alfajores from Argentina 🇦🇷

    Alfajores are a South American caramel dream – the moment you bite into them, you immediately sense their special aroma. They're a bit more time-consuming to prepare, but the end result is worth every effort.

    Recipe:

  • 300 g corn flour, 100 g flour, 200 g butter, 150 g sugar, 2 eggs, dulce de leche.
  • Roll out the dough, cut out circles, bake, fill with dulce de leche and dust with powdered sugar.
  • Serving idea:

    Dust the alfajores with powdered sugar and present them on your wooden board like little snowballs ❄️.

    5. Spicy & crispy: Florentines from Italy 🇮🇹

    Florentines radiate pure elegance and are reminiscent of the loving preparation of an Italian nonna 👵🏻.

    Recipe:

  • 150 g almonds, 100 g sugar, 50 g honey, 50 g butter, 100 g chocolate.
  • Caramelize almonds, place on wafers, bake and cover with chocolate 🍫.
  • Serving idea:

    Place the Florentines on your serving board and garnish them with a sprig of rosemary 🌿 – a highlight not only in terms of taste but also visually.
