How to properly care for your handmade serving board
Handcrafted serving boards are not only functional kitchen aids, but also real gems for every kitchen and dining table. To ensure that you can enjoy your unique wooden board for a long time, proper care is crucial. Here we show you how to clean, care for and store your serving board optimally.
- cleaning after use
Wooden boards should never be put in the dishwasher as the moisture can cause the wood to swell and damage the surface. Instead, clean the board by hand:
- Use warm water and mild detergent.
- Wipe the board with a soft sponge.
- Rinse well and dry immediately with a clean cloth to avoid water stains.
- disinfection and odor neutralization
Wood has antibacterial properties, but strong foods such as onions or garlic can leave behind odors. For cleaning and disinfection we recommend:
- Rub with coarse salt and half a lemon. The salt acts as a scrub and removes impurities, while the lemon disinfects and neutralizes odors.
- Alternatively, you can use a mixture of water and vinegar. Wipe the board with a damp cloth and let it dry completely.
- Regular care with oil
To ensure that the wood of your serving board stays beautiful and does not dry out, you should oil it regularly. Here's how to do it correctly:
- Use food-safe oils such as mineral oil, linseed oil or special wood oil for kitchen utensils.
- Apply a small amount of oil to a clean cloth and massage it into the wood.
- Allow the oil to absorb overnight and wipe off any excess oil with a dry cloth the next day.
- Store properly
Wood should be stored in a dry place, away from heat sources and direct sunlight. It is best to store your board upright so that air can reach all sides and it can dry evenly. This will keep it dimensionally stable and prevent it from warping.
