🇪🇺 European BBQ Sauces – German Beer BBQ Sauce, British HP-Style BBQ Sauce, Mediterranean Olive BBQ Sauce

BBQ is no longer just an American phenomenon – Europe also has unique sauces that are perfect for grilled meat, fish, and vegetables. Today, I'm introducing you to three special BBQ sauces from Europe that you should definitely try.

1. German Beer BBQ Sauce

This sauce combines the bitter flavor of a good beer with sweet and smoky notes. Perfect for pork, beef, or hearty sausages.

Ingredients:

  • 250 ml ketchup
  • 100 ml dark beer (e.g. Bock beer or stout)
  • 50 g brown sugar
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp mustard
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika powder
  • ½ tsp garlic powder
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • Salt to taste

Preparation:

  1. Combine all ingredients in a small saucepan and bring to a boil over medium heat, stirring occasionally.
  2. After about 15 minutes the sauce should have thickened slightly.
  3. Remove from heat and let cool.

Use:

This sauce goes perfectly with sausages, grilled pork and burgers.

Durability:

Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.

2. British HP-Style BBQ Sauce

The British BBQ version is reminiscent of the famous HP sauce – a spicy, fruity and slightly sour sauce that goes perfectly with steaks, ribs and grilled vegetables.

Ingredients:

  • 200 ml apple cider vinegar
  • 100 g dates or raisins (finely chopped)
  • 100 g tomato paste
  • 50 ml malt vinegar
  • 50 g brown sugar
  • 1 tsp Dijon mustard
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • ½ tsp cinnamon
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • Salt to taste

Preparation:

  1. Place all ingredients in a saucepan and simmer over low heat until the mixture thickens.
  2. After about 20 minutes, smooth with a hand blender.
  3. Let it cool and pour into a bottle.

Use:

Goes great with grilled meat, steak sandwiches and as a marinade for chicken.

Durability:

If stored in a cool place, the sauce will last up to 3 weeks.

3. Mediterranean Olive BBQ Sauce

This sauce brings the flavor of the Mediterranean to the grill. Olives, herbs, and a light tomato flavor make it a perfect accompaniment to fish, lamb, and vegetables.

Ingredients:

  • 200 g strained tomatoes
  • 50 g black olives (finely chopped)
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tbsp balsamic vinegar
  • 1 tsp oregano
  • 1 tsp thyme
  • ½ tsp garlic powder
  • ½ tsp chili flakes
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Preparation:

  1. Heat the olive oil in a small saucepan and fry the chopped olives in it.
  2. Add tomatoes, balsamic vinegar and spices and simmer over medium heat.
  3. After about 10 minutes, remove from heat and let cool.

Use:

This sauce goes perfectly with grilled fish, lamb chops or roasted vegetables.

Durability:

Keeps in the refrigerator for up to one week.
